Bloody Sunday, the bombings on the streets... Did all this really happen?
While I am now standing here right in the middle of (London) Derry in the year 2005, it is hard for me to imagine the troubles which took place here in the past and which still happen today. At this very moment, everything looks so peaceful…

Wherever I turn my eyes to, I see murals. Big paintings on house walls – some are shocking, some not. But they all make me wonder about one thing. And that is: WHY? Why can’t there be peace between Protestants and Catholics?

Make up your mind, people! It’s the 21st century! Bring this war to a final end! No more fights! No more victims! No more cameras! It’s time to begin a new chapter! Imagine how great it would be to have a newspaper headline like this:
„Peace between Protestants and Catholics – Northern Ireland re-united!“

But I’m afraid this picture of a Northern Ireland without any troubles is only a dream. More days, weeks, months, years, decades, maybe centuries will pass by without seeing anybody in Ulster smoking a peace pipe. Sad but probably true.

Nevertheless: Let us be optimistic! There’s always hope…
